Rangers Earn Split with #5 East Mississippi

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – After scoring the second-most runs in school history in a 27-5 win over No. 5 East Mississippi in Game 1, Northwest couldn't complete the sweep in an 8-4 loss in the nightcap for its eighth split this season.

Northwest moved to 15-11 overall and 5-5 in the north and is now 5-3 against ranked teams this season. EMCC moved to 19-7 overall and 6-2 in the division standings.

After falling behind 1-0 after one inning behind Trent Waddell's sac fly that scored Chase Nyman, it was all Northwest after that in Game 1.

The Rangers put up a touchdown on the scoreboard in the second to take a 7-1 lead, using RBIs from five different players, including a two-run shot to left-center for Jay King

It became contagious and the offense wasn't done yet as the runs and hits began to pile up.

Northwest scratched across 12 runs in its half of the third in almost an hour half inning that ended with one run-scoring hit after another. EMCC used three different pitchers in the frame, roughed up by home runs from Luke Latham and J. King and doubles by Hunter Austin and Taylor King.

After seven in the second and 12 in the third, the Rangers added eight more in the fourth as part of 27 unanswered runs for a 26-run advantage. James Lear hit his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left, Chase Clark added his third of the year and Stephen Sexton also chipped in his first career home run.

EMCC got four back in its final at-bat on a sac fly, wild pitch and two-run home run for Waddell.

The 27 runs was the second-most in school history behind a 28-run effort at Coahoma on March 25, 2003.

Matt Ferguson improved to 3-3 in 4.1 innings of work while Davis Brown closed it out. EMCC used seven different pitchers and Kyle Liberto took the loss after allowing seven runs off eight hits in just 1.2 IP.

EMCC entered Wednesday's doubleheader allowing only one home run in 24 games, but surrendered six in the lopsided, 27-5 Game 1 loss.

All nine hitters in the Rangers' lineup had multiple hits, led by Austin's 4-for-4 effort and six RBIs from King.

The Lions got a gutsy effort from J'Daylin Jackson in Game 2 to earn a split, with the freshman going 6.1 innings, striking out seven and throwing 130 pitches to improve to 6-0 on the year.

Northwest didn't help themselves out in the nightcap, stranding a season-high 13 runners on base, including the bases loaded on three different occasions.

Tied 2-2 after three, EMCC scored two runs in each of the ensuing three innings to take an 8-2 advantage. Chase Reeves, Tyler Odom and Kyle Liberto each hit solo home runs.

Northwest got single runs back in the sixth and seventh and had the tying run at the plate in its final at-bat before a strikeout and groundout ended the game. Conner Burton was credited with his fourth save of the year.

Tanner Cable took the loss to fall to 2-2, surrendering five runs off six hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings.

In the split, Northwest scored 31 runs off 30 hits with six doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs, 13 walks, five hit by pitches and six stolen bases for a .476 batting average on the day.

Northwest will take to the road on Sunday, traveling out of division for a DH at Copiah-Lincoln (9-17). Check our schedule page for links to live video and live stats that will be available through the Wolfpack.
