Baseball Splits with John Wood, Rend Lake

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – Northwest opened up a season-long 10-game homestand at Jim Miles Field on Saturday with a win over John Wood, 8-1, and loss to Rend Lake, 11-4, in the nightcap.

The 15th-ranked Rangers are now 8-4 on the year.

Against John Wood (0-1), Jay King hit a two-run home run in the first as part of a three-run inning and Luke Latham added a three-run bomb in the sixth as part of a five-run frame.

That was more than enough run support for Tanner Cable (2-0) who tossed 5.1 innings of three-hit ball and allowed just one run and struck out five. Tyler Scholl and Peter Barton closed it out the final 1.2 innings.

Seven different Rangers had hits in the win, with King, Latham and Kramer Hollenbach delivering two apiece.

Rend Lake jumped on top of Matt Ferguson and Northwest early in the final game of the day, taking a 6-1 lead after four before Latham's second three-run home run pulled it to within 6-4 after five.

But the Warriors put it away an inning later with a five-run frame, highlighted by Landon Thomas' three-run home run to right off Colin Liles. A.J. Hummel added a two-run single later in the inning.

Rend Lake out-hit Northwest 12-6 and capitalized off three Ranger errors. The top of the Warrior lineup went a combined 5-for-13 with six RBIs. For Northwest, James Lear was 3-for-4.

Sammy Stearns grabbed the win in five innings of work.

Northwest returns to action on Wednesday, March 5 against 7th-ranked Jones County (14-0) at 2 p.m. in Senatobia. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday.
