Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – After giving up three runs in the sixth to drop the opener 3-2, Northwest rode the arm of
Tanner Cable and the bat of
Taylor King to run-rule Lake Land 11-1 in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split.
Northwest moved to 4-2 on the year, while Lake Land fell to 1-5 on the young season.
Matt Ferguson (1-1) had another quality start in his second outing of the season in Game 1 and was cruising along on the mound before running into trouble in the sixth.
Northwest scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, using a sac fly from
James Clark and solo bomb from
Luke Latham over the scoreboard, to take a 2-0 lead into the sixth.
Lawrence Moore led off the inning with an infield single and Jhonathan Mendoza doubled to put two on. Jacob Daily cut the lead in half with an infield single before Darren Saunders launched an opposite field, two-run home run to right to give the Lakers the eventual game-winner.
Kramer Hollenbach capped a 3-for-3 outing (tied his career-high) with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth to put the tying run on, and advanced to third two batters later. But he was stranded after back-to-back groundouts and then the Rangers would go down in order in the seventh.
After Lake Land went up 1-0 in the top of the second in the nightcap, Northwest responded with 11 unanswered runs over the final four innings to take a run-rule win.
Northwest sent nine batters to the plate in the second and plated five runs, highlighted by
Stephen Sexton's two-RBI triple off the top of the wall in straight-away center. Starter Logan Rippy was chased after just 1.1 innings.
The Rangers broke it wide open in the third with four more runs, using an RBI-double by
Taylor King, his third of the game, and bases-loaded walk from Hollenbach.
Eight different Rangers had a hit in the win, led by
Taylor King with three.
Cable (1-0) went 4.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run (unearned) and striking out six in the victory, while
Tyler Scholl tossed the final two outs in a scoreless fifth in his season debut.
Northwest will return to the diamond next Tuesday, Feb. 25 against Southwest Tennessee.
