Ranger Softball Opens 2014 Season in Style

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SENATOBIA – Sophomore outfielder Katelyn Westbrook had a breakout afternoon by going 4-for-5 with four RBIs and a walk-off single in Game 1 to help Northwest sweep Southwest Tennessee 11-3 and 10-4 in its season opener Wednesday.

Northwest improved to 2-0 and is now an impressive 40-9-1 in its last 50 home games. Southwest fell to 1-5 on the young season. The teams will meet again on April 9 in Bartlett, Tenn.

After falling behind 2-0 after a half inning in Game 1 on a two-run homer by Kelsey Knight, Northwest scored nine unanswered runs off nine hits to take a 9-2 lead after three.

Jessica Holliday started the scoring with an RBI-single up the middle in the first, followed by a two-run single by Andi Barrett and RBI-single by Naomi Newcom. Lindsey Shaw and Newcom then added RBIs in the second after another four run frame.

Westbrook would put the finishing touches on a career-high 3-for-4 outing in the fifth inning, hitting a bloop single down the right field line to score Alex Barrett and Alyssa Dean for the walk-off win.

Holliday, Micalah Beall and Lydia Dias each saw action in the circle, with Beall getting her first collegiate win in 2 innings of relief work.

Northwest spotted Southwest another two runs in the first inning of Game 2, but again responded with five runs in the first two frames to take a 5-3 lead after two.

Dallas Chipman hit a two-run single to put the Saluqis in front early before a Kendall Alford RBI-single and double steal allowed the Rangers to tie it.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the second, Haley Vance, Drennan Nemnich, Janie Turner and Dean all reached base safely to start the inning, as Dean drew a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to knot it at 3-3. Westbrook would then put Northwest in front for good two batters later with a two-run single to left.

The Rangers added single runs in the fourth and fifth before another three in the sixth, as they put the cap on a great offensive day with a 10-4 win in the finale.

Roxanna Kimes picked up the win in 2 innings of relief work, striking out two and allowing no hits and no runs. Kiley Dunagan started in the circle.

Northwest scored a combined 21 runs off 23 hits with 14 RBIs and seven stolen bases in the sweep.

Northwest will play in the Northeast TigerFest this Saturday-Sunday in Booneville.
