SENATOBIA – Playing on consecutive nights for the only time all season, Northwest bounced back from a 5-point loss to Itawamba on Monday with a big win over Jackson State Tuesday night, 88-70.
Northwest improved to 9-2 overall, while Jackson State fell to 5-6.
JSCC scored the game's first seven points before a
Camia O'Neal 3-pointer at the 17:16-mark gave Northwest its first basket.
Kelsey Brown and
Diamond Robinson each followed with 3s to jumpstart a 12-4 run and give the Lady Rangers their first lead of the night.
JSCC pushed back in front the ensuing 11 minutes before a 7-0 run, capped by
Aspriona Gilbert's layup at the buzzer, allowed Northwest to take a 41-38 lead into the half.
The teams exchanged five leads and the game was tied six times in the first half.
Northwest scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 48-38 lead, scoring on
Bethany Lytle's layup and free throw, two free throws from
Kristina Mays and a layup from
Tekevanna Young.
The Lady Rangers would never trail after that, taking advantage of their size underneath and outscoring the Lady Generals 30-10 in the paint in a double digit win.
Gilbert scored 11 of her game-high 19 in the second half, but it was Northwest's bench who stepped up and combined to score 23 points down the stretch for a 43-26 advantage in the game.
Behind Gilbert's third career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Brown poured in a career-high 16 points to go along with five assists and Mays added 10 points and five rebounds.
Four Lady Generals scored in double figures, with Andrea Moffitt and Chelsea Wyatt scoring 16 apiece. Moffitt added 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Northwest will enjoy a month off before returning to action on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Jackson State.
