SENATOBIA – Trailing by as many as a dozen late in the first half, Northwest strung together a 20-0 run midway through the second half to rally for an 83-73 north division win over Itawamba Monday night.
Northwest improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the north while Itawamba, the reigning MACJC Champions, dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the division. The teams have split the last 12 meetings.
Down 37-25 with 3:32 left in the first half, the Rangers scored nine of the final 12 points of the half to cut it to a 40-34 deficit at the break.
The run gave Northwest plenty of momentum to start the second half, and after a
Sebastian Petty layup, what was a 12-point deficit was just two points.
ICC pushed its lead back out to eight on two separate occasions and led 57-50 at the 10:48-mark before the train fell off the tracks and the Indians went ice-cold from the floor.
Northwest rallied for a 20-0 run over the ensuing 4:51 and turned a 7-point deficit into a 13-point lead with 5:57 to play. ICC missed eight straight shots and the Rangers connected on 7-of-10 shots, capped by
Kieth Broome Jr.'s jumper.
Broome was lights out in the second half, scoring 19 of his game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 aim.
Courtney Shannon chipped in 11 points off a jumper and trio of 3-pointers to finish with 16 on the night.
ICC never got within double digits the final 6:27 of regulation.
After shooting 34 percent in the first half, Northwest shot 51 percent in the second half to close the night at 44 percent.
Four Rangers finished in double figures, led by Broome's 22, 16 points and 10 assists from Shannon, 15 from
Sebastian Petty.
Sharwyn McGee chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.
Austin Timms led the Indians with 17 points, Kevis Fleming added 15 and Howard Thomas chipped in a double-double with 13 points and game-high 14 rebounds.
Northwest will enjoy a month off before returning to the hardwood on Jan. 8 against Arkansas Baptist.
