Box Score RIDGELAND – Trailing 2-0 late in the first half on the road, Northwest rallied for three unanswered goals over the final 61:42 to come-from-behind and defeat Holmes 3-2 in the north division opener for both teams.
Northwest improved to 3-1 overall (3-0 on the road) and 1-0 in the division while Holmes fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Miranda Gonzalez gave the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead just 2:38 into the match, sailing a free kick over the head of goalkeeper
Morgan Wilson from 25 yards out. Aija Baker made it 2-0 Holmes in the 18th minute.
Alex Young brought Northwest within a goal in the 39th minute off a double assisted effort from
Alex Jones and
Holly Newman, scoring her third goal of the young season, to make it 2-1 at the half.
Newman and the Lady Rangers drew even at 2-2 in the 53rd minute when the freshman took a rebound off Jones' shot and scored it past the arms of Tera Tims.
Northwest would then complete the three-goal swing in the 75th minute when
Taylor Renth deflected a clearance from the keeper and raced around her for the open net goal and game-winner.
Northwest was out-shot 17-5 in the match but stayed in it thanks to
Morgan Wilson's career-high 11 saves.
The Lady Rangers will enjoy a week off before returning to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 13 at Hinds.
