Newman's Hat-Trick Lifts Rangers Over Bears

Box Score SENATOBIA – Freshman Holly Newman netted her first career hat-trick and Northwest scored four second half goals in a 6-1 victory over Southwest on Tuesday afternoon at the Ranger Soccer Complex.

Northwest improved to 6-2 on the season, its most wins since the 2006 season when they finished at 14-5 overall. Southwest fell to 0-8-1. 

Jessica St. Pierre put Southwest on the board first in the 11th minute, firing a long shot over the head of Morgan Wilson for an early 1-0 lead.

Newman scored the first of her three goals of the day in the 23rd minute to knot the match at 1-1, using a nice pass from Yanira Cura

Northwest took a 2-1 lead at the half thanks to an own goal.

In the second half it was all Lady Rangers, as Northwest outscored Southwest 4-0 and used goals from three different players to pull away for the win.

Newman completed her hat-trick with goals in the 60th and 68th minutes, using assists from Alex Jones and Rachel Elkins. Jones then found the back of the net in the 71st minute and Randa Martin, as time expired, netted her first collegiate goal. 

Northwest out-shot Southwest 43-4 (27-4 shots-on-goal) and enjoyed a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

Wilson had four saves in moving to 4-1 overall on the year in the net, while Southwest keeper Hayley Allen had an impressive 21 saves in defeat.

Northwest will return to the pitch on Saturday, traveling to Union University for a non-division match.
