Late Rally Not Enough, Rangers Fall 2-1 to Holmes

SENATOBIA – Northwest rallied within a goal with 20 minutes left in regulation but it wasn't enough Tuesday afternoon as visiting Holmes picked up a 2-1 victory at Ranger Soccer Field.

Holmes evened its season record to 6-6 overall and moved to 3-4 in the north division while Northwest dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the north. The result also gave the teams a season split.

Jenna Ceravolo broke a scoreless tie at the 19:39-mark when she fired a shot into the box that richocheted off a Ranger defender and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the 68th minute when Tara Turner used a Brittany Cochran assist to extend the lead to a pair of goals.

Northwest cut the score in half just 1:10 after Turner's goal, as freshman Emily Castoria placed a beautiful header off a Bree Francis corner past Karli Blakely.

The Lady Rangers, however, couldn't find the equalizer down the stretch despite having multiple opportunities in front of the goal.

The final stat sheet was pretty evenly matched, with Holmes outshooting Northwest 11-10 (6-6 SOG) and the Lady Rangers earning six corners to Holmes' three.

Blakely picked up five saves in the victory while Ashlee Rogers stopped four shots and allowed two goals.

Northwest will take to the road on Friday as they will do battle with Itawamba at 2 p.m.
