PERKINSTON – The Northwest women's soccer team opened the 2011 soccer season with a pair of road defeats this weekend, falling 5-0 to Pearl River on Friday night and again on Saturday to Gulf Coast, 2-0.
In the season-opener, Pearl River (2-0) opened the first half with four goals to take a commanding lead at intermission, getting a pair of goals each from Analejsia Lee and Emmaleigh Davis. The Lady Wildcats would add one more in the second half courtesy of Maguy Paschal off the bench to close out a 5-0 win.
The Lady Wildcats out-shot the Lady Rangers 29-2 on the match, led by Davis' seven shots.
Northwest sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Brewer allowed all five goals, but also picked up six saves on the night, while freshman Leighanne Stewart minded the net the final six minutes. Hannah McCarty played the full 90 for Pearl River in the win.
A hard-fought, 2-0 loss to Gulf Coast (2-0) on Saturday closed out the weekend, with the Lady Bulldogs scoring two late first half goals to take the victory. It marked their second shutout in as many days.
Scoreless through the first 32 minutes, Gulf Coast put together back-to-back scores in less than four minutes. Blair Guice connected on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute for the first goal, while Natalie Gilmore connected in the 35th minute.
Jessie Ladner and Paige Killebrew combined for a shutout in net for Gulf Coast.
