Women's golf sits 5th as a team after day one of the Lady Ranger Invitational

Castillo sits in 6th to lead Northwest efforts after 36 holes

TUNICA – The Northwest Mississippi Community College women's golf team finished day one of the Lady Ranger Invitational on Monday at Tunica National Golf Club sitting in fifth place as a team in a field loaded with teams from last year's national tournament, including the defending national champion Shelton State Community College and a top five team in Murray State College (OK).

Playing another tournament with mostly freshmen representing the scoring team, Northwest finished the 36-hole marathon of a day with scores of 43-over and 46-over, finishing just seven strokes back of fourth place and only 24 strokes back of a tie with the aforementioned Shelton State, who sit in second place.

Northwest was led by Elsa Lomas Castillo, who finished the day at 13-over and in a tie for sixth place as an individual, posting consistent rounds of six-over and seven-over, including a round with four birdies on her opening 18 holes.

Right behind Castillo is fellow freshman Rylee Summerlin, who also played a consistent two rounds on the way to an 18-over day and a spot in 14^th place by herself. She had almost identical cards, with 10 pars and one birdie, only getting hampered by a few stretches at the turn on the 16^th through the third holes.

Elizabeth Kilpatrick, Graysa Enders, and Avery Baker all finished in the top 30 on the day. Kilpatrick closed with a 13-over on her second round to finish the day a 29-over and in 25^th place. Enders is just one place back in a tie for 26^th after a 13-over on her first 18 before closing with a 17-over on the second round, and Baker matched both her rounds with a pair of 16-over rounds for a 32-over day, finishing in 29^th.

Evalynn Ward closed out the Rangers competing in the field with a few tough rounds in her first action of the year, shaking off the rust with an 85-over day, improving on her second round to finish 62^nd.

Northwest will be teeing off early on Tuesday, with action set to begin at 8:30 a.m. when Ward tees off of the first hole, followed by Baker at 8:40, Enders at 8:50, Kilpatrick at 9:00, Summerlin at 9:10, and Castillo closing out the team's tee times at 9:20.
