WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The perfect season continued on Tuesday night for the Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team after they took down the Williams Baptist University JV team in straight sets, improving to 5-0 in the process and keeping their unblemished 15-0 record in set play along the way.
The match was a quick one for the Rangers, taking the first set 25-12 before holding off a challenge in the second set that ended with a 25-17 win. Northwest didn't hold back in the third, rolling to a 25-9 win in the final set of the sweep.
The attack was a balanced one, led by sophomore Ariana Woods, who picked up her fifth match with double-digit kills to open the season, tallying ten in the match with only one error for a .529 hitting percentage.
Valerie Hurdle added another seven on 19 attacks, and Sofia Gonzalez finished with five in a match where she didn't make any errors.
The duo of Chloe Rodriguez and Dallas White were in good form again, with both spreading the ball around for double-digit assists, led by 15 from Rodriguez and ten from White. Jania Rose added another six assists for the team on their way to 35 of their 36 kills resulting from a pass.
Northwest also was able to garner five aces in the serving game, but struggled with errors, finishing the night with nine.
On the defensive side, blocking was a big key. The team tallied 13 blocks as a group, including three solos, with two of those coming from Woods. She led the team with four total blocks, and Taylor Tally was close behind with three block assists of her own.
The lack of a consistent attack from the Eagles kept the back row from putting up big numbers in digs, but the Rangers did get 41 spread around to 12 players, including six from both Gonzalez and Rose to pace the team.
With the win, Northwest closes out a stretch of five straight matches away from Howard Coliseum, but that ends tonight when they head home to take on Coahoma Community College (0-0) in the Tigers first official volleyball match in program history.
