SUMTER, S.C. - The Northwest Mississippi Community College women's tennis team struggled to replicate their day one success and only won two matches on the second day of the NJCAA DII Women's Tennis National Tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
"Today was a tough day on the courts. When you reach the final eight at the national tournament, you have to expect that," Head Coach Ryan Mounce said. "We were able to pull out a huge win in the main draw from Meg Daves, and Angela Ortiz managed a win in the back draw to gain valuable points. We look to continue climbing in the points race tomorrow."
The first victory came from the Flight 4 Singles Quarterfinals and was far and away the shining moment of the day for the Rangers.
Sophomore Meg Daves completed a successful comeback after losing the first set 2-6. The second set was the turning point as Daves had to win the set in a seven point set tiebreak, and she was able to keep her cool and to win the tiebreak in a dominating 7-1 fashion. The momentum Daves gained from winning a tough second set carried her through the third set and ultimately pushed her to victory.
"After losing the first set, I knew I had to remain calm, not get intimidated, and play my game," Daves said. "A negative attitude is going to bring a negative mindset, but I didn't do it alone. I knew I had my team, family, and the other Mississippi JUCO school rooting for me as well."
The other victory came from Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez in her Consolation Draw Quarterfinals singles match. Ortiz-Sánchez was simply dominant in her win and was off the court quickly after an 8-1 victory.
Although the rest of the NWCC team members put up good fights in their respective singles and doubles matches, no other member of Northwest's team earned a win.
Daves will play in the Flight 4 Semifinal tomorrow at 10:00 A.M. CT while Ortiz-Sánchez will play in the Flight 1 Consolation Draw Semifinals at 12:00 P.M. CT. Both matches will be played at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
