Ranger softball splits a pair of games to Motlow State and Pensacola State on the first day of the Coyote Classic

Meredith Dearman pitched her first career shutout in the game against Motlow State.

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team (3-1) split a pair of games to Motlow State (0-5) and Pensacola State (2-4) on the first day of the Coyote Classic at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Game 1 - NWCC 2 Motlow State 0

In game one, both the Rangers and Bucks struggled to produce runs.

Even though the team garnered eight hits, Northwest struggled to move runners around the bases, and Emma Jennings and Lindsey Gillis came up with the only two RBIs of the game with clutch hits in the third and sixth innings. NWCC was able to garner five stolen bases and one batter hit-by-pitch.

Although the offense struggled to get started, the Ranger pitching and defense proved to be a formidable force throughout the game, not committing an error all game.

Freshman Meredith Dearman got the start for Northwest and pitched a complete game shutout for the first of her career and has only allowed one run in two starts this season. Dearman finished the game only allowing two hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Game 2 - NWCC 3 Pensacola State College 8

In a game that was tied 3-3 after seven innings, NWCC gave up five runs in the top of the eighth, ultimately costing them the win.

The Rangers once again struggled to bring in runners, garnering nine hits but only scoring three runs. The three runs came as the result of two RBIs from Handley McAtee and one from Mary Madison Kelley.

Northwest also only had two hits for extra bases, both doubles, one from Kelley and one from Carleigh Calarco

Catelyn Brown got the start for the Rangers and went into the eighth inning, but after running into trouble was pulled after giving up four runs in the top of the eighth without getting any outs. She finished the outing allowing seven runs, only five of them earned, on seven hits while only striking out two and walking three.

Dearman came in for relief to close the game out in the eighth inning and faced four batters, allowed one unearned run on one hit, and struck out two batters.
