SENATOBIA – In a historic moment for the Northwest Mississippi Community College women's golf team, Addison Forbes became the first Ranger in program history to sign to continue her career at a four-year program.
Forbes, who is from Denham Springs, Louisiana, will be continuing her career at Millsaps College, a NCAA Division III school in Jackson.
For Head Coach Adam Payne, who is in his first year as coach, getting a freshman who has had to persevere through multiple adversities to the next level is special.
"It's always important to see kids who come here for two years have the opportunity to play somewhere else," Payne said. "It's the first girl ever in just the second year of our program, so it's good to see those freshmen who came in move on somewhere else. She was patient after going through a lot of turmoil when she came here and several coaches, but she stuck with it and has worked hard and been a great leader ever since."
Forbes said her move to Millsaps is one that comes from the environment they will provide the chances to really further her education.
"It was the education and the opportunity to continue to play," she said. "I'm super excited to continue playing with a group of girls that I haven't played with before, and we are going to be traveling a lot to different states so that's exciting."
With a resume that includes a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in as a freshman where she would finish in 71st, she will be bringing a strong veteran leadership to her new home with the Majors.
She isn't running off to Millsaps too quickly though. With a full spring season to play, the Rangers will still be looking for her to play a big role as they prepare for the stretch run with their opening tournament in just two weeks.
Forbes also has her attention sent on a possible trip to nationals from May 10th through the 15th in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She and the rest of the Ragners on the golf course will kick of their spring season on February 23rd and 24th in the Snead State Women's Spring Invitational in Mobile, Alabama.
The next few months will be some that Forbes is going to look to hold onto, saying the friends and memories are ones she will cherish.
"I love Northwest. I wish I could stay here for four years. I appreciate everything Coach Payne has done for us and he's helped me improve a lot. I love the girls so much, and the guys too. I've built some really good friendships, and I hope I keep them forever because they've helped me become a better person as well."
