Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Mary Grace Black

Northwest women's basketball stumbles in 60-43 defeat to Northeast.

Story accumulates her 13th straight double-double.

SENATOBIA - The Northwest Mississippi Community College women's basketball team (15-8, 6-3) scored only 16 points in the second half in a tough 60-43 loss to Northeast Mississippi Community College (10-14, 4-5).

In the first quarter, NWCC played stellar defense only allowing seven points on 23.1% (3-13) shooting. After Northeast built a small 5-2 lead, the Rangers were able to go on an 11-0 run to take a 12-7 run into the second quarter.

There was no separation in the second quarter as both teams scored 15 points. However, Northwest capitalized off of turnovers, scoring six of their 15 points in the quarter off of turnovers. Due to the lead that the Rangers built in the first quarter, the team was able to take a 27-22 lead into halftime.

NWCC saw a dip in their offensive production in the second half, only shooting 16.7% from the floor in the third quarter and 23.1% from the floor in the fourth. Northwest also saw the Tigers outscore them in both quarters in the second half. Fouls also became a problem for Northwest with both Alorian Story and Dekyra Mitchell in foul trouble.

Another factor in the loss for the Rangers was the fact that they got out rebounded 46 to 37.

"We just didn't follow the scouting report and the game plan that Coach P [Vaquela Pimpton] and I talked about prior to this game," head coach LaTaryl Willams said.

On a positive note, Story was able to garner her 13th straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Scoring 11 points off of the bench, Takera Bland continues to make her way back from a knee injury in December.

Northwest will look to regroup before a tough week that sees them playing three games in the span of six days. Next week, the Rangers will travel to both Southwest and Copiah-Lincoln on Monday and Saturday, respectively. They will also host Hinds in Howard Coliseum on Thursday.

"It doesn't get easy. We just got to take it one game at a time," Coach Williams said. "Watch some film, look at some of the mistakes we made, and try to go out correctly and practice and see if it carries over to the game on Monday."

Northwest will travel to Summit on Monday, February 16 to take on the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears (7-15, 3-6).
