SENATOBIA – The Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team has announced the hiring of a new assistant coach, as David Kuhn has accepted the position and will be joining the coaching staff for the Rangers going into the 2026-27 season.
"To get an assistant coach like David Kuhn, who has so much experience coaching softball at all levels in Mississippi, is amazing," Athletics Director Jake Gordon said. "He will be a great help to Coach Bramlett in all facets of coaching."
Kuhn joins the team after decades of experience as a head coach at the NJCAA and NCAA levels, with coaching stints at the University of Central Arkansas, Delta State University, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and most recently for one season at the University of the Ozarks.
He left UCA as the winningest coach in program history, accumulating 380 wins and leading the Bears to nine straight conference championship tournaments, winning the title in 2015. He added another 368 wins at Delta State, guiding the Lady Statesmen to 10 straight conference championship tournaments and an NCAA Division II regional championship. Another 131 wins came at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College over four seasons.
His last stop at the University of the Ozarks saw him turn the program around from an 11-win season in the year prior to his hiring to a 25-21 record in his only season.
"I am so excited to add Coach Kuhn to our coaching staff," Head Coach Chelsea Bramlett said. "His experience not only in our league but at the four-year level just adds to our incredible program. What he is going to add to our team is indescribable and really going to escalate our softball program to the next level."
Kuhn said the opportunity to come and work at a program that is supported as well as the Northwest softball team is was one he couldn't pass up, praising the direction the program has been going.
"It's a great community college in a great area with great leadership," he said. "There are great coaches, with a great program and great facilities. There are no negatives."
While most of his career has been as a head coach, Kuhn said he is looking forward to the chance to work with Bramlett, saying she has been someone whose career he has followed all the way back to when she was a player.
"I've known Coach Bramlett for a long time, all the way back to when she was playing travel ball in high school," Kuhn said. "There are about four or five kids on the team that I recruited at past schools, so there is a familiarity with the team, and it's just good timing."
With over 900 career wins, Bramlett said he is someone that she is excited to be able to have as a second in command, and that she is looking forward to learning from him in many ways.
"I am really excited to be able to work with him and learn from him as well as move our program forward with his contacts, field knowledge, and coaching style," Bramlett said. "I believe this is a huge step for our softball team, and I am blessed to get to work with him and Coach E."
The Rangers are coming off of back-to-back trips to the NJCAA Division II World Series, and have been there three times under Bramlett, who has won 199 career games for the Rangers as she enters her eighth year at the helm of the program.
While the resume is a long one for Kuhn, he said the success of the team is the end goal, and he will work in whatever role is needed for that result.
"My role is whatever Coach Bramlett tells me to do," he said. "Our goal is to go back to the World Series and compete for a national championship, bottom line."
Northwest is currently in the middle of their fall schedule, with six days of games remaining through Oct. 31. You can find out more about the Rangers softball team, including news and schedule updates, by visiting nwccrangers.com or by following along on social media accounts.
