Rangers outlast Southwest in five set thriller for 11th consecutive win

SUMMIT - The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team extended their winning streak to eleven games with a five-set win on the road at Southwest Mississippi Community College, taking down the Bears 19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10 to move to 14-2 on the season and 5-0 in conference action.

Set one started out with the two sides trading runs until the host Bears pulled away with a 6-0 burst to take a 16-7 lead, forcing a timeout by NWCC. Northwest did rally for the rest of the first set but the hole was too big to come back from and SWMCC survived a 6-1 run by the Rangers that cut the lead to 19-23, wining the final two points and take the opening set.

Northwest kept the momentum they had gained to start the second set, bursting out to a 5-2 lead but Southwest put another 6-0 run together to force a timeout by the Rangers. NWCC fought back to take the lead at 16-15 and both sides traded points and leads for the remainder of the set until the Rangers went up 21-18. A few questionable calls changed the course of the match to see the Bears even the set at 23 all, but Northwest finished on a run to take it 25-23 and even the match at one all.

In the third set, tension was high throughout as both teams again traded leads throughout, with seven ties and five lead changes leading to extra points and the Bears taking lead two sets to one with a 26-24 win and putting the Rangers into a difficult position to rally from.

After opening up the fourth set with a six all tie through 12 points, Northwest never trailed again. The Rangers pulled away to lead 11-7 and again extended the lead to 18-12, holding on to the six point edge to force a fifth set after a 25-19 win.

The host team took the opening point of the final set but the Rangers rolled off six straight points on the opening serve, including a pair of aces, that gave a commanding lead to Northwest and the Bears never recovered, closing the gap to 9-6 at their closest, but Northwest finished on a 6-4 run to take home the hard fought five-set win.

A pair of Rangers finished with double digit kills as Callahan picked up a season high 17 followed by Ariana Woods who added 10 of her own. Claire Roberts had one of her best matches of the year with eight kills and Aven Mathis closed out the top hitters with six of her own.

The two setters for the Rangers also had impressive nights with Dallas White leading the way with 23 assists and Chloe Rodriguez had 18.

Blocking was particularly impressive as the match went on and was a game changer in fact, as the team registered 10 block assists and one solo block. Woods registered the solo and had four total blocks in the game to lead the team.

Serving improved as the match went on and after some early struggles that led to 16 service errors in the match, the team finished with nine total, led by Woods who had three aces and Hassie Clare Thurman who also had three.

The Rangers are back at home for another conference match when they face Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at 5:00 pm at Howard Coliseum.
