SENATOBIA- Northwest Mississippi Community College women's basketball team (5-4) fell to Killgore College (5-3) by a score of 64-51 on Saturday evening at Howard Coliseum to wrap up the Guaranty Bank Holiday Classic.
Â
The game started as a closely contested matchup, and the NWCC women ended the first quarter tied at 17-17.
Dekyra Mitchell scored eight of Northwest's 17 points, hitting two threes.
Â
The second quarter saw NWCC drop in offensive productivity, only scoring eight points in the frame and going into the half down
Â
Northwest looked to provide a spark to their offense in the second half and Mitchell did just that, scoring 16 of the Rangers 18 points in the third quarter as they rallied back to only down four going into the fourth quarter.
Â
"I just love her aggressiveness," said Head Coach
LaTaryl Williams about the sophomore transfer. "(Mitchell) is someone that we can count on to be aggressive, looking to get points and making plays for others."
Â
The offense lulled once again in the fourth quarter only scoring eight points in the frame as Kilgore outscored them 17-8 on the way to a 64-51 final.
Â
One contributing factor to the Northwest defeat was the fact that Kilgore rebounded the ball 58 times, 17 more rebounds than NWCC's 41. That included 41 defensive rebounds for Kilgore and a pair of players who finished with double digits.
Alorian Story did lead NWCC in rebounds with 12 in the game.
Â
Although NWCC got out rebounded, they took better care of the ball than KC, only turning the ball over 11 times which was six less than their opponent.
Â
The team will be back in action on the road Saturday, November 29 at 4 p.m. when they take on Dyersburg State (6-1). Dyersburg State's only loss has come at the hand of the Rangers.
