FAYETTE, AL – The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team (20-3, 7-1) picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday in a tri-match with Bevill State Community College and Wallace-Selma Community College, taking down the Bears and Patriots in sweeps to pick up their 19th and 20th wins of the season.
"It was a good day in Alabama," Head Coach Allison Burchyett said. "We are so excited to get to 20 wins in September, and we are looking forward to playing at home against Jones College."
The host Bears got the first crack at the Rangers and Northwest made quick work of the match, winning in straight sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-7, hitting .322 as a team and only committing six hitting errors across the three sets.
Serving was extremely impressive for the Rangers who picked up 14 aces, including a new career high from Jania Rose who picked eight aces with only one service error. Her previous career best was six against Lewis and Clark community College on August 29th. Rose also added a team high 14 digs in the match and was the only Rangers to reach double figures in that category.
Offensively, Northwest spread the love around, with three players tallying nine kills each. Chloe Fesperman, Adalyn Callahan, and Ariana Woods all matched the mark with Callahan leading the crew in hitting percentage, only making 14 attacks and hitting .571. Seven total Rangers recorded a kill in the match.
Dallas White continued her run as the leading assister for Northwest, spreading out 16 assists and Saylor Bryant added 15 in the two-setter rotation.
Northwest kept the momentum rolling into the second match against Wallace-Selma, taking down the Patriots in a 25-8, 25-20, 25-12 sweep to close the day.
Burchyett used the match to get plenty of players involved in the offense with a season high eleven Rangers recording a kill. Fesperman led the way with eleven kills with Woods and Callahan both adding eight each.
Bryant was the top passer in the match with 18 assists and White added another 14.
As a team, the Rangers actually served more aces but spread them around more. Fesperman picked up a career best five and both Rose and Hassie Clare Thurman picked up three each. Seven players picked up an ace in the match for Northwest.
Woods was the leading blocker across both matches with two solo blocks and two block assists on they day.
The win over Wallace-Selma was the 20th of the season for Northwest and they become the first team in NWCC history to reach the mark in the month of September. 2023 was the first team to reach 20 wins, reaching the mark on October 6th when they were 20-15 at the time. That team team set a record with 28 wins on the year. In 2024, the Rangers reached 20 wins on October 7th with a record of 20-7 at the time.
Northwest will look to keep the momentum going on Wednesday night when they host Jones College in a pivotal MACCC match at 6:00 pm at Howard Coliseum. The Rangers defeated the Bobcats 3-1 in Ellisville on September 22nd and the two teams are 2-2 all-time against each other.
The match will be streamed online at nwccrangers.com/watch with the pregame beginning at 5:50 pm. More information on the Rangers schedule can be found at nwccrangers.com or by following Northwest social media accounts.
