PARIS - For the second time in as many cycles, Northwest men's basketball alumnus Shelby McEwen has qualified for the Summer Olympic games, competing in the high jump for Team USA.
McEwen, a native of Abbeville and former University of Alabama track star, finished with the top marks in last month's Olympic qualifying trials in Eugene, Ore. Now, the schedule is set for the high jump qualifying round and final round in Paris.
Qualifying rounds will take place on Wednesday, August 7 at 3 A.M. Central time, with the final round scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 at 12:05 P.M. Central. Both events are tentatively scheduled to be carried live on the Peacock streaming app.
McEwen finished 12th in the world during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, which were delayed until the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, he ran track at Alabama and spent two seasons on the men's basketball squad at Northwest from 2015-17.
