Shelby McEwen Punches Ticket to Second Consecutive Olympic Games

Former Ranger wins high jump finals at U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - For the second time in three years, former Northwest men's basketball standout Shelby McEwen has earned a spot on Team USA ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

McEwen, a native of Abbeville, won the high jump finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday afternoon, completing a peak jump of 2.30 meters. The former Alabama track star also cleared all of his jumps on his first attempts until the 2.36-meter jump, which he missed after already qualifying for the Team USA roster.

McEwen beat out 12 other competitors in the finals, including JuVaughn Harrison (LSU), who also competed on Team USA with McEwen at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Last Thursday, McEwen finished with a peak of 2.19 meters in the qualifying round, earning a bid to the finals.

This marks the second trip to the Summer Olympic games for McEwen, who previously finished 12th in the world in Tokyo.

McEwen ran track at the University of Alabama after spending two seasons playing men's basketball for Northwest from 2015-17. During his Ranger career, McEwen played in every game and developed into an every day starter by his sophomore season. In 49 career contests, he averaged 5.3 points, three rebounds and 1.1 assists per game, along with 46 career steals and 17 blocks.

The 2024 Summer Olympics will begin on July 26 and run through August 11. Coverage is expected to be carried across the NBCUniversal networks, including NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network and more, with some events also airing on the Peacock app.
