SENATOBIA - Two Northwest baseball alumni have been selected for high school head coaching positions in nearby DeSoto County.
Lewisburg High School announced the hiring of former pitcher Tyler Scholl on Tuesday afternoon, while Olive Branch High School appointed LeeMarcus Boyd to lead the Conquistadors' baseball program. Scholl replaces departing Patriots' coach Rusty Cagle, whom he also played for at Lewisburg, while Boyd takes over for former coach Ryan Porter.
Scholl helped the Patriots to a 26-12 record and state runner-up finish his senior year, finishing with a state-best nine saves, along with a 1.48 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 28 innings. He pitched for Northwest from 2013-14, helping the Rangers to back-to-back 30-win seasons. As a freshman, Scholl appeared in 15 games on the mound as a closer, registering five saves with a 3.09 ERA in 11.1 innings of work.
As a sophomore, Scholl made 18 relief appearances with six saves, a 1-0 record, 0.50 ERA and a .133 opponent batting average.Â
Scholl then finished his career at Mississippi College, where he earned six career saves, including five in his 2016 senior campaign. He collected 35 strikeouts and a 3.55 career ERA with the Choctaws, and was one of six MC players to make the 2016 NCCAA All-Mid East Region team.
Following his college career, Scholl returned to Lewisburg and has spent the past eight seasons as an assistant coach on Cagle's baseball staff.
Prior to Northwest, Boyd spent his varsity career at Independence High School, where he was named a two-time all-state selection, two-time team MVP, All-Tate county, four-time all-district player and golden glove award winner. He also batted .419 his senior year with three doubles, one triple and one home run.
Boyd spent the 2015-16 seasons with the Rangers, playing in 98 career games at shortstop. He batted .334 for his career, hitting 22 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 53 RBIs. He also finished with 39 career stolen bases and a .939 fielding percentage, and was voted as a First Team All-MACJC selection.
Following Northwest, Boyd signed with Southern Miss, where he spent the 2017-18 seasons with the Golden Eagles. During his time in Hattiesburg, Boyd hit .286 with 35 doubles, two doubles, 11 home runs and 82 RBIs. He also finished with a .935 career fielding percentage.
Boyd was signed by the Colorado Rockies as a free agent on July 11, 2018, and made three stops with the Boise Hawks, Asheville Tourists and Lancaster JetHawks in the Rockies' farm system. He retired from his playing career in January 2020.
