Northwest Sweeps Northeast in Conference Road Match

Lady Rangers to begin second leg of MACCC competition on Wednesday at Pearl River

BOONEVILLE - Behind 12 kills and nine digs from freshman Maddie Smith, Northwest left Northeast with a clean 3-0 decision on Monday evening.

Rachel Stegall also provided 10 kills in the win, as the Lady Rangers stretched its wining streak to 16 matches. For the season, Northwest moved to 5-0 in conference competition and 20-6 overall, surpassing the 20-win mark for the second consecutive year.

Northeast led early in the opening set, only for the Lady Rangers to respond for a 9-6 advantage. Northwest further widened the gap to 22-13, but the Lady Tigers clawed back to close the gap to 24-18, before the Lady Rangers clinched a 25-19 decision coming out of a timeout.

Both teams traded points early in the second set, but Northwest soon turned a narrow 8-7 advantage into an 18-13 lead. With Sailor Cole on serve, the Lady Rangers strung together a few more points, pulling the lead to a 22-13 mark.

Although Northeast once again fought back late to close the gap, Northwest captured the second set by a 25-19 margin, earning a 2-0 match advantage.

Things were not quite as close in the third and final set, as the Lady Rangers bolted to a 6-1 lead, before stretching the score to an 11-4 mark. Although Northeast pulled within three points midway through the set, Northwest pushed the score back to 20-14 and soon clinched the match with a 25-17 victory.

Stegall posted two service aces and also tied Smith for the team-high in digs, followed by seven from Layla Dyer. Additionally, Dyer also led the Lady Rangers with 29 assists, while Kaya Coleman accounted for a pair of blocks and service aces.

Irby Norris led Northeast with 11 kills, followed by seven from Avery Thomas. Amberianna Shorter posted 10 digs to lead the Lady Tigers, while Sophie Johnson added 20 assists.

Next up for the Lady Rangers will be a road rematch at Pearl River, scheduled for Wednesday, October 9. Northwest got the best of the Lady Wildcats in their earlier meeting on September 23, earning a 3-1 victory at Howard Coliseum.

Pearl River (7-17, 2-3 MACCC) is coming off Monday's 3-0 loss to Itawamba. The Lady Rangers trail the all-time series, 12-4, but have won four of the last seven meetings. Of note, Northwest has never won in Poplarville since the two teams began playing each other during the COVID-19 delayed 2020 season.

First serve is scheduled for 5 P.M. at Shivers Gymnasium in Poplarville, with live broadcast coverage on prccmedia.com. Tickets can also be purchased at prccathletics.com/tickets.
