SENATOBIA - With Friday's 6-0 victory against Copiah-Lincoln, the Northwest women's soccer program officially clinched the MACCC Championship and the overall top seed in the upcoming NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
It marks the second consecutive season where the Lady Rangers have earned at least a share of the conference title. Last season, Northwest finished as MACCC Co-Champions with Jones College and Holmes, as all three teams ended the regular season in a three-way tie atop the standings.
With the win, the Lady Rangers improved to 15-0 on the season and 10-0 in the MACCC. The victory also marked the eighth shutout victory of the season for Northwest.
Six different players scored for the Lady Rangers, starting with
Emma Jensen's goal in the fifth minute. It was the 14th goal of the season for the Gammelby, Germany native.
Though the score stayed at 1-0 for the next 19 minutes, sophomore
Allie Reed Greer broke up the scoreless drought with her third goal of the season in the 24th minute. Freshman
Molly Thompson followed with a goal in the 28th minute, thanks to a double assist from Lille Grace McCutchen and
Raegan Tucker, bringing the Lady Rangers' lead to 3-0.
Nearly 11 minutes into the second half, Northwest fired up the offense yet again, as Jensen assisted
Allie Kimbrell in the 57th minute.
Brandy Hernandez followed with a goal in the 74th minute, assisted from
Allie Sifford, and
Emma Earwood provided the Lady Rangers' final goal in the 79th minute.
Northwest dominated the tone of the match, firing off 25 total shots and allowing just one for Copiah-Lincoln. The Lady Rangers also finished with 17 shots on-goal.
Anna Kathryn Harrell and
Ann Marie Barton split halves between the posts, with Barton tallying the only save for Northwest late in the second half. Meanwhile, Olivia Conway provided 11 saves in a full 90 minutes for the Lady Wolves.
Northwest also finished with 12 corner kicks, compared to just two from Copiah-Lincoln. The Lady Rangers were also whistled for 11 fouls, including a caution on
Amiyah Baker in the 21st minute.
Copiah-Lincoln dropped to 3-5-4 overall and 3-4-3 in conference play.
Northwest will close out the regular season on Tuesday, October 29 against Meridian. First kick is slated for 7 P.M.
