New Year Opens with Rangers' Road Victory

Northwest to host Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday

DYERSBURG, Tenn. - Freshman Thomas Tangle collected his first career double-double and three Northwest players reached double figures, as the Rangers picked up a 78-68 triumph at Dyersburg State on Saturday afternoon.

For Northwest, it marked the third win in the last four games, as the Rangers bumped their record to 4-7. Dyersburg State fell to 1-9 with the loss, dropping both of its season meetings against Northwest.

An early 11-2 lead made things seem destined for a blowout, but the Rangers would eventually squander the lead midway through the first half. Despite trailing 24-22 with six minutes remaining, Northwest would get the lead back on a made three-pointer from Shavurdacour Nicholas with 1:30 to go. The basket was good enough to send the Rangers to the locker room with a slim 33-30 advantage.

For most of the second half, it was Northwest that remained ahead, leading 46-40 through the first five minutes of the second half. Dyersburg State remained within striking distance for nearly the entire half, but the Rangers managed to stay one step ahead until the final buzzer, securing the valuable non-conference victory.

Tangle finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicholas led all Northwest scorers with 18 points. Keanu Patrick also added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, followed by seven points by Marquavous Jones.

Northwest shot 40 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free throw line. Dyersburg State was 43 percent from the floor and 53 percent from the charity stripe.

Northwest will host Copiah-Lincoln on Thursday, January 11 at 7:30 P.M. for the first home game of the 2024 calendar year. Fans unable to attend can catch all the action on Ranger TV.
