BRENHAM, Texas - A rare trip to the Lone Star State didn't get off to the start that Northwest wanted on Thursday evening, as No. 9 Blinn College swept the Lady Rangers in straight sets.
Blinn took the opening set by a 25-11 margin, before taking a 2-0 match lead with a 25-12 decision in the second set. Northwest inched closer in the third set, but still fell by a 25-15 score.
Northwest finished with 20 kills in the match, but the Lady Buccaneers came away with 41. Blinn also bested the Lady Rangers in total assists (37-19), service aces (5-2), total blocks (13-8) and digs (30-22).
Jacia Hayes had 10 kills and two blocks to lead Northwest, while
Layla Dyer came away with 10 assists and four digs.
Kailey Gooch totaled five kills and two blocks, and
Kaley Rikard had four digs and two service aces.
Blinn was led by 12 kills from Kellen Dorotik and four blocks from Taylor Glendening. Cierra Pesak had 12 digs for the Lady Buccaneers, while Chloe Howard accounted for 29 of the team's 37 assists.
With the loss, Northwest dropped to 9-11 on the season as Blinn improved to 22-1 overall. The Lady Rangers will have a quick turnaround on Friday, facing Our Lady of the Lake JV and No. 3 Dallas College-Brookhaven in the Blinn Invitational, before closing out the weekend against Dallas College-North Lake and Dallas College-Eastland on Saturday.
