PARK HILLS, Mo. - For Northwest, Sunday's biggest opponent wasn't the 12th-ranked South Suburban College Lady Bulldogs, but instead the heat.
With temperatures right at the 100-degree mark and heat indices nearing 110, a decision to suspend the remainder of the match was made by Mineral Area College, the host institution for this weekend's matches. The match was formally suspended in the 32nd minute, with the Lady Rangers leading 5-0.
Because the first half was not completed, the match will not count toward either team's overall record, nor will any stats recorded. Northwest officially sits at 1-0, while South Suburban remains 0-0 on the season.
Prior to the suspension of the match, the Lady Rangers took a 2-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Emma Earwood scored off a corner kick and
Caroline Chandler also added a goal.
Meanwhile,
Jada Jelks tapped in her third goal of the weekend at the 15-minute mark and the first heat timeout of the match. In the 23rd minute,
Jadyn Duran scored off a corner kick from
Mari Julia Delgado, stretching the lead to 4-0.
Brandy Hernandez tacked on the final goal of the match, scoring in the 29th minute, just before the next heat timeout.
Next up for Northwest is a road match at National Park College, scheduled for Wednesday, August 23 at 10 A.M. No live stream will be available.
