Peyton Plumlee Earns Call-Up to Double-A Level

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - For the first time in his post-collegiate career, former Northwest and Mississippi State pitcher Peyton Plumlee has earned a promotion to the Double-A level of Minor League Baseball.

Plumlee, a native of Olive Branch, was promoted to the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Double-A Texas League on Wednesday morning, after starting the season with the Asheville Tourists of the High-A level. Both teams are members of the Houston Astros organization.

Plumlee was selected in the 31st round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft by Houston and has remained in the Astros' system since, including stints with Asheville, Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Single-A) and former Class-A Short Season affiliate, the Tri-City ValleyCats. So far this season, he has pitched 12 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA.

Prior to his career in the Astros' organization, Plumlee pitched for Northwest and Mississippi State. He spent the 2016 season with the Rangers, finishing 6-2 on the mound with a 4.58 ERA in nine starts. During that lone season with Northwest, Plumlee totaled 53 strikeouts against 23 walks in 55 innings of work, holding opposing batters to a .268 batting average and throwing one complete game, a 6-3 victory at Northeast.

At Mississippi State, Plumlee appeared in 26 games with eight starts as a sophomore in 2017, tallying 54 strikeouts. One of the biggest highlights of that season came in the Hattiesburg Regional, where he earned the save in a critical game against South Alabama.

After missing his junior season, Plumlee returned to the mound for his senior campaign and played a pivotal role as the Bulldogs' Sunday starter for most of the 2019 season. Through 14 starts and 19 appearances, Plumlee recorded a 6-4 record and a 3.87 ERA with 57 strikeouts against 26 walks.

Plumlee is one of three Northwest pitchers currently in a Major League organization. Former teammate Jarod Wright (Chicago Cubs) has made six appearances for the High-A South Bend Cubs, including two saves and eight strikeouts, while Grant Black (St. Louis) has made six appearances with 12 strikeouts for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
