SENATOBIA - Twelve different players scored for Northwest on Monday afternoon, as the third-ranked Lady Rangers delivered a record-setting 19-0 victory against East Mississippi.
Evie Crawford led all Lady Rangers with four goals and an assist, as Northwest shattered the previous single-match scoring record of 16, set against Southwest Mississippi on September 29, 2006. The win also helped Northwest improve to 13-0 overall and 6-0 in the MACCC.
It took Northwest just five minutes to open the floodgates, as
Avery Hooker's assist resulted in Crawford's first goal. Crawford struck again in the 10th minute, this time taking in a ball from
Kaley Harden, and a goal from
Hudson Lindsay less than a minute later made it a 3-0 lead.
Hooker then added a goal of her own in the 13th minute, thanks to an assist from
Addison Vargas. In the 14th minute,
Sophia Lopez would notch her first goal of the season, scoring off a corner kick from
Allie Reed Greer, extending the lead to 5-0.
Less than a minute later,
Jada Jelks got in on the fun, adding her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Crawford. In the 16th minute, Crawford would earn the hat trick from another Vargas assist, boosting the Lady Rangers' advantage to 7-0.
With the bench mostly emptied for Northwest, Hooker grabbed her second goal of the match unassisted and then assisted Crawford on the Tupelo native's parting shot in the 22nd minute. For Crawford, it was her 12th goal of the season, bringing the lead to a 9-0 margin.
However, Northwest was far from finished. After
Mari Julia Delgado's corner kick found the foot of
Mia Kate Cade in the 23rd minute, Alexandria "Penny" Warner netted her 11th goal of the season off Cade's assist.Â
Seven of the final eight goals came between the 33rd and 44th minutes, starting with
Emma Earwood's assist to Delgado. Delgado would then earn her second assist of the match, feeding
Raegan Tucker in the 35th minute, widening the gap to 13-0.
Warner scored one more time, thanks to Tucker's assist in the 38th minute, then
Jadyn Duran followed with back-to-back goals in the 39th minute. Tucker and Warner were credited with the assists on Duran's goals, moving the Las Cruces, N.M. native to 10 goals scored.
With the first half drawing to a close, Duran fed Delgado in the 41st minute to officially break the scoring record, and Cade found Earwood for a goal in the 44th minute, giving Northwest the whopping 18-0 halftime lead.
Only one goal would come in the second half, as Vargas connected on her third goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Jelks contributed the assist and the match was called in the 71st minute.
Abby Tutor started the match in between the posts for Northwest, playing the full 71 minutes. In total, Northwest fired off 49 shots, which included 31 on-goal.
Next up for Northwest is perhaps the biggest test of the regular season, a showdown with No. 1 Holmes on Friday, October 6. The Lady Bulldogs (11-0, 6-0 MACCC) are coming off Tuesday's 3-1 road win at Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Northwest has not defeated Holmes since October 17, 2014 and the two teams have tied in each of the last three meetings, including last year's MACCC title match, where the Lady Bulldogs won by a shootout.
Kickoff for Friday's match is scheduled for 1 P.M. in Senatobia. Live coverage will be provided onÂ
Ranger TV.
