MEMPHIS - Northwest alumnus and former Arkansas-Monticello pitcher Grant Black has moved back to the Triple-A ranks.
Black, a native of Newport, Ark., was promoted to the Memphis Redbirds last weekend, marking his second stint with the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate. So far, he has made two appearances with the Redbirds, earning the win in a relief outing against the Durham Bills on July 4.
Black also spent two months with the Redbirds last summer and started the 2022 season with Double-A affiliate Springfield Cardinals. His journey with the Cardinals began in February 2020 when he was assigned to the Gulf Coast League prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Black helped Arkansas-Monticello to back-to-back GAC Tournament Championships from 2016-17. He was 5-6 with a 4.59 ERA and five complete games in his senior campaign, recording 68 strikeouts and logging a team-high 102 innings of work. He concluded his two-year UAM career with nine wins and a 4.45 ERA, striking out 118 batters.
Prior to UAM, the Newport, Ark., native spent the 2015 season at Northwest after transferring from Arkansas Baptist. Black appeared in six games for the Rangers, going 1-1 in two starts with a 7.64 ERA. He gave up 16 hits and struck out 10 batters.
Black is one of four Rangers currently playing professional baseball, joining fellow pitchers Cody Reed (Tampa Bay), Jarod Wright (Chicago Cubs organization) and Peyton Plumlee (Houston Astros organization). Plumlee is currently with the Single-A Fayetteville Woodpeckers and Wright was recently promoted to the Cubs' Double-A affiliate in South Bend, Ind.
