Leatherwood, Van Cleve Help Ole Miss to Omaha

Rebel duo part of five former Northwest players to reach CWS

OMAHA, Neb. - After being one of the final few teams selected to the NCAA Division I Tournament field, the Ole Miss baseball program now finds itself heading to the College World Series after sweeping Southern Miss in the Hattiesburg Super Regional over the weekend.

Two Rebels will help represent Northwest on the biggest stage in college baseball - senior infielder Ben Van Cleve (Indianola) and senior outfielder Hayden Leatherwood (Collierville, Tenn.). The duo suited up for the Rangers during the 2018-19 seasons, helping coach Mark Carson and his staff to a pair of postseason runs and a combined 63 victories.

With Leatherwood and Van Cleve advancing to Omaha, Northwest has now had five former players reach the College World Series over the past two seasons. Last season saw Mississippi State win its first NCAA title, thanks to the efforts of pitcher Parker Stinnett, infielder Tanner Leggett and outfielder Brayland Skinner. (All five players were teammates on the 2019 Northwest squad.)

Ole Miss will join seven other teams in the College World Series field. The tournament will run from June 17-27 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb. All games will be carried by the ESPN family of networks.
