Jitaurious Gordon Named Southland Conference Player of the Year

Former Ranger named conference POTW seven times

FRISCO, Texas - Former Northwest men's basketball standout Jitaurious Gordon has been busy since making the jump to the Division I level.

After he spent the 2019-20 season with Troy University, Gordon transferred to Nicholls State to finish out his collegiate career. The transfer paid off, as Gordon was officially named as the Southland Conference's Player of the Year on Monday afternoon.

Gordon's most recent accolade comes after also earning his second All-Southland First Team nod, thanks to his conference-leading scoring average of 21.6 points per game, a mark that also ranks ninth in the NCAA. He was also named conference Player of the Week seven times this season, a new league record, and is only the second Nicholls player to earn Player of the Year since Reggie Jackson (1995).

Gordon has totaled four 30-point games this season for the Colonels, including a career-best 36 points against New Orleans. He has also set a program single-season record with 99 made three-pointers, while ranking seventh in the nation with an average of 3.67 three-pointers per game and tying for sixth and seventh in the conference for assists per game (3.2) and steals per game (1.5).

This season, Gordon has helped Nicholls to a 21-10 overall record and the regular season conference title. The Colonels have sported an 11-3 conference record and will begin their postseason journey in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament on Friday, March 11 in Katy, Texas.

While at Northwest, Gordon was a two-time all-conference selection from 2017-19 and averaged 20.6 points per game, while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor. The Tunica native and Horn Lake High School alumnus currently ranks eighth in the Northwest record books for three-point percentage (.349), ninth in three-pointers made/attempted (106-304) and tied for 10th in scoring average (17.4 points per game).

Gordon is one of several former Rangers currently in the Division I ranks, including R.J. Duhart (Appalachian State), Carlos Curry (Georgia Southern) and DeAntoni Gordon (Little Rock).
