TOKYO - All good things must eventually come to an end. For Abbeville native and former Northwest men's basketball standout Shelby McEwen, his Olympic journey concluded with a 12th place finish in Sunday morning's high jump finals.
McEwen, who starred for the Rangers from 2015-17, cleared his first attempt at 2.19 meters and rallied to clear 2.24m on his third and final attempt, after missing the first two chances. His first attempt at 2.27m was a success, but all three of his attempts at 2.30m fell short, despite a close third and final attempt.
McEwen, an Alabama alumnus, was one of only two members of Team USA to compete in the finals, joining SEC counterpart JuVaughn Harrison (LSU), who placed seventh overall.Â
Prior to the finals, McEwen placed fourth in the qualifying round last Thursday evening with a best mark of 2.28m. He struggled early in the event, missing three of his first four attempts before clearing 2.21m to avoid disqualification. From there, McEwen cleared his first attempts at 2.25 and 2.28 meters with ease.
"The journey [will] continue," McEwen said, in a statement on Twitter. "[Finished] Top 12 in the world. I'll be back stronger and better than ever."
