Northwest Falls to Hinds in Walk-off Fashion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RAYMOND - Losing a game on a walk-off is tough enough, but Northwest experienced that feeling twice in a pair of 6-5 and 4-3 losses at Hinds on Saturday.

After trailing in both games, the Rangers rallied to take a lead in the top of the seventh, only to be defeated on a walk-off homer in Game 1 and a walk-off triple in the nightcap.

With the losses, Northwest dropped to 12-10 overall and 9-9 in MACCC competition. The Rangers will have an extended break before resuming play at Mississippi Delta on April 6.

Game 1 - Hinds 6, Northwest 5

Northwest got the bats going early in the opener, as Caylee Comer delivered a two-run shot in the top of the first, for her fifth homer of the season. The 2-0 lead would be a brief one however, as Hinds rebounded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the contest up at 2-2.

After watching the Eagles tack on two more runs for a 4-2 lead, Northwest got things going in the top of the seventh, as back-to-back Hinds errors scored a run for the Rangers. Comer then followed with a two-run single to send the Rangers ahead 5-4.

Hinds tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the Eagles then delivered a solo home run, denying Northwest the Game 1 victory.

Northwest finished with five hits in the contest, led by two hits and four RBIs from Comer. Kaylei Peterson (6-4) came up on the wrong end of an otherwise thrilling pitching battle, striking out six batters in 6.1 innings.

Hinds was led by two hits apiece from Ashley Lightcap and Natalie Parker, while Ashley Lopez picked up the win in the circle for the Eagles.

Game 2 - Hinds 4, Northwest 3

Both teams combined for 17 hits in the finale, but Hinds once again delivered the late-inning magic to deny the Rangers a chance at a conference split.

Scoreless through three and a half innings, the Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 advantage.

Saige Koczka finally got the Rangers' bats going in the top of the sixth, as the sophomore smashed a double to left center. Comer would then score Koczka on an RBI-single, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.

Down to her last strike with two outs, Koczka came up big once more at the plate, slamming a two-run homer to give the Rangers a 3-2 advantage.

Once again though, Hinds would play the spoiler role for the Rangers, as the Eagles ended things on a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh.

Northwest finished with eight hits, with Koczka, Laila Armstrong and Molly Harris earning two apiece. Despite the loss, Koczka (4-4) delivered another solid outing in the circle, dishing four strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

Hinds was led by nine hits in the finale and a complete outing from Parker in the circle.
