Sophomores Cap Home Career in the Win Column

SENATOBIA - Behind a 20-point performance from DeAntoni Gordon and a near double-double from Carlos Curry, Northwest celebrated Sophomore Night in style with an 83-68 victory against Coahoma on Thursday evening.

Northwest improved to 6-7 on the season with the victory and inched up to sole possession of fourth place in the MACCC North Division standings. The win also marked the regular season home finale for the Rangers, and the team's 4-3 record at Howard Coliseum marked the 14th consecutive season with a winning home record.

With the loss, Coahoma dropped to 2-10 on the season, including three losses to the Rangers.

Tyler Lang got the Rangers going with the game's first two baskets and Northwest never looked back. Despite multiple Coahoma efforts to cut the lead under five, the Rangers seemed to always craft a response when needed, never losing the advantage.

James Richards III helped Northwest take its largest first half lead of nine at the 7:53 mark and the Rangers went into the locker room with a 32-26 lead at the break.

Although Ben Galmore's quick three-pointer helped Coahoma trim the deficit to three in the opening seconds of the second half, Northwest remained in control the entire way and used the span of the second half to slowly wear down the Tigers.

A layup from Gordon allowed Northwest to take a 10-point lead less than five minutes into the second half and the Rangers led by 10 or more the rest of the way. The Rangers briefly stretched their lead to 20 points with 4:06 remaining, but even a few late baskets from the Tigers did little to dampen the Rangers' mood.

In addition to his 20 points, Gordon also collected six rebounds and finished second to Curry's 14 rebounds, nine points and four blocks. Jaylon Sanders also collected 10 points in the victory.

Galmore's 25 points were enough to lead both teams in scoring, while Stephon Isom and Cavin Paige both collected 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Northwest outperformed Coahoma in nearly every aspect, including overall shooting (50%), total rebounds (49-30) and bench points, where Cori Bell, Deveon Miller and Forte Prater accounted for 19 of the Rangers' 32 reserve points.

Northwest will conclude the regular season at Itawamba on Monday, March 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. in Fulton and the game will be carried live on letsgoicctv.com/red.
