CLARKSDALE - In just his second career start, Northwest freshman
Tyler Lang totaled 14 points as one of four Rangers in double figures in a 71-50 rout at Coahoma on Monday evening.
With the win, Northwest earned its first road win of the season and improved to 4-5 overall, inching up to fourth in the MACCC North Division standings. Coahoma dropped to 1-7 on the season with the loss.
Northwest led for most of the contest and never took its foot off the gas pedal, cruising to a 36-20 halftime advantage. Coahoma turned up the intensity on offense in the second half, but the Rangers kept pace and never allowed the Tigers to truly threaten.
In addition to Lang's career performance, Northwest also picked up 13 points apiece from
DeAntoni Gordon and
James Richards III.
Carlos Curry also posted 10 points, while Gordon and
Kavonte Tunstall led the team with eight rebounds apiece.
Northwest shot 38 percent from the floor and 27 percent from beyond the arc. The Rangers also outperformed Coahoma in total rebounds (50-31), points in the paint (32-16) and fastbreak points (21-9).
Coahoma was led in scoring by Stephon Isom and Cortez McCarty, who posted 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Tigers were led in rebounds by Cameron Bell (6).
Northwest will return to Howard Coliseum on Thursday, March 4 to host second-place Holmes. The Bulldogs (6-2) handed the Rangers an 84-59 loss on February 4 and have won five straight, including a 68-50 win against Mississippi Delta on Monday night.
