CLARKSDALE - Behind a season-high 490 yards of total offense, Northwest bounced back into the win column with a 42-12 victory at No. 14 Coahoma on Thursday evening.
Several big plays highlighted the Rangers' efforts, including three touchdowns from sophomore
Jaquerrious Williams, one coming in the form of a 70-yard reception. With his other two coming on the ground, the Tupelo native surpassed John Avery for second all-time in career rushing touchdowns (26), trailing only Justin Crawford's record of 30.
Quarterback
Michael Hiers also passed for three touchdowns of 70 yards or more, including a 92-yard shot in the first half to
D.T. Sheffield, a play which now stands as the third-longest pass and completion in program history.
After Northwest forced Coahoma into a three-and-out on the Tigers' first possession, the Rangers scored three plays later on a 42-yard carry from Williams to go up 7-0 at the 11:45 mark of the first quarter.
Coahoma came up empty-handed on its next possession, only for Hiers to connect with Sheffield on the big 92-yard touchdown reception. The Tigers then closed out the first quarter on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that ended on a short touchdown from Jakobi Jackson, closing the gap to 14-6.
Neither team would score again until the 5:58 mark of the second quarter, when a short one-yard touchdown from
Jamarien Bracey capped off a nine-play, 77-yard drive, pushing the Rangers to a 21-6 lead.
With four minutes remaining in the first half, Hiers would connect with Sheffield once again, this time on an 82-yard catch that extended the Rangers' advantage to 28-6. Northwest would cap off the first half with one last score, the 70-yard pass from Hiers to Williams, pushing the lead to a comfortable 35-6 margin at halftime.
Northwest was unable to score on its first drive of the second half, but the Tigers responded with a seven-play, 68-yard possession that resulted in a short touchdown pass from Mekhi Morris to Trayvon Moore. Coahoma was unable to convert on the two-point attempt however, as the Rangers led 35-12 with 4:30 left in the third quarter.
Williams ended the quarter with his milestone touchdown, a 24-yard run that pushed the Northwest lead to its final 42-12 point.
Northwest outgained Coahoma 490-322 in total yards, with 365 of those yards coming through the air. The Tigers edged the Rangers 152-125 in rushing yards, but scored just once on the ground.
Hiers finished 14-of-18 in pass attempts with 365 yards and three touchdowns, with Sheffield notching 202 receiving yards and two touchdowns on four catches. Williams led all Northwest rushers with 106 yards on 13 carries, while
Jacoby Jones also reeled in four catches for 59 yards.
Defensively,
Rontavious Person led the Rangers with eight total tackles, followed by six each from
Jarvis Townsend and
Sam Brumfield. Freshman
Tevin Bell also collected four tackles with a pass breakup and an interception.
For Coahoma, Norris completed 14 of his 23 pass attempts for 106 yards and a touchdown, while also finishing as the Tigers' leading rusher with 51 yards on 10 carries. Jackson also totaled 46 yards on six carries, while Daylyn Croom led CCC in receiving with 68 yards on six catches.
Marlon Windham led the Tigers with seven tackles, including three sacks, while five other players finished with four each.
With the win, Northwest improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the MACCC North Division. The Rangers will step out of division play next week, as Northwest travels to ninth-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast on Thursday, October 14. Kickoff in Perkinston is scheduled for 7 P.M.
