SENATOBIA - After successful regular seasons for both Northwest soccer programs, the Rangers and Lady Rangers are just days away from embarking on a new journey into the MACCC/Region 23 Tournament.
One of those playoff matchups will take place at Northwest, as the nationally-ranked Lady Rangers will return to their on-campus facility for a matchup with Meridian at 1 P.M. on Tuesday, November 2. The Ranger men will also travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday, with that match scheduled for a 6 P.M. first kick from Perkinston.
Ranked at No. 13 in the most recent NJCAA Division II polls, the Northwest Lady Rangers (14-2-1) concluded the regular season with a 2-2 draw against No. 4 Holmes, solidifying a second-place finish in the MACCC North Division. This will mark the first time in program history that the Lady Rangers have hosted a first-round postseason match.
Tuesday's match will also mark a return to the Lady Rangers' on-campus facility, a site that the program called home from 2002-19. Since then, Northwest has played its matches at the Senatobia Sports Park on an interim basis, due to ongoing construction for a new facility.
Meridian, the Lady Rangers' opponent, finished its regular season at 7-7-2 overall and 5-3-2 against division competition, earning the third and final seed from the MACCC South Division. The two teams have met twice over the past two seasons, with Northwest winning 3-1 at MCC on August 27 and 5-2 last spring at the Senatobia Sports Park.
Since the inception of the Lady Rangers' program in 2002, Northwest is 6-7-2 all-time against Meridian. The two teams have met once before in the postseason, where Northwest claimed a 2-1 road victory on October 28, 2014 to advance to the MACJC Semifinals.
Fans unable to make the Lady Rangers' match can follow all the action on Ranger TV (nwccrangers.com/watch) and Facebook Live.
As for the Northwest men, the Rangers finished the regular season 4-10-1, with all four wins coming against North Division opponents. The 4-4 division record included a sweep against Holmes and splits against East Central and Hinds, helping the Rangers secure the program's first postseason berth since 2016.
Northwest's opponent, Mississippi Gulf Coast, is ranked No. 13 in the most recent NJCAA Division II men's rankings. The Bulldogs finished the regular season at 9-5-1 overall and earned the second-place slot from the MACCC South Division, with a 7-2-1 mark against division competition.
Mississippi Gulf Coast leads the all-time series against the Rangers, 11-2-2, with Northwest garnering regular season victories in 2003 and 2011. The two teams have met twice in the postseason, with the last meeting resulting in a 2-1 loss on October 24, 2009.
