Rangers Drop Road Loss at Northeast

Box Score BOONEVILLE - Sophomore forward Carlos Curry finished with his first double-double of the season (11 points, 10 rebounds), but it wasn't enough to lift Northwest to a win at rival Northeast on Thursday evening, as the Tigers came away with the 64-54 triumph.

Northwest dropped to 1-2 on the season, while Northeast remained unbeaten at 3-0 overall.

Foul trouble plagued Northwest early in the first half, as the Rangers were whistled for seven fouls just six minutes into the contest. Despite the unkind whistles, Northwest led the Tigers 17-7 at the 12-minute mark of the half.

Northwest also held Northeast scoreless from the floor until the 11:03 mark of the half, when Jacob Tracey's layup sparked a 13-2 run for the Tigers, which sent the home team ahead 20-19.

A layup from James Richards III briefly stopped the bleeding with under five minutes to go until halftime, but the Tigers still closed out the first half with a 23-9 run over the final 11 minutes to take a 30-26 lead at the break.

Northwest stormed out of the locker room with a 13-2 run over a five-minute span to open the second half, reclaiming the lead at 37-32. Northeast would waste little time issuing a response after a timeout however, as the Tigers raced back to tie the contest at 42-42 with 10:27 to go.

Opposite of the first half, foul trouble haunted the Tigers throughout the second half, which allowed the Rangers to keep things close until the two-minute mark, when Northeast took a 10-point lead.

Despite some chances from the Rangers to climb back into striking distance, Northeast held firm on the home floor and held on to the 10-point victory.

Neither team finished with a banner night of shooting from the floor, as Northeast shot 35 percent compared to roughly 33 percent from the Rangers. The Tigers also out-rebounded Northwest 47-39.

Aside from Curry's double-double, freshman guard Forte Prater also totaled 11 points as Jaylon Sanders came away with six boards and five points.

Ken Lewis led the Tigers with 14 points, while Jaylin Rice and Kylan Blackmon tallied 10 points apiece. Zeke Cook also led Northeast with 11 rebounds.

Northwest will return home on Monday, February 1 in hopes of getting back in the win column against Coahoma. CCC (1-1) is coming off a 59-52 victory against Mississippi Delta on Thursday evening.

Tipoff for the Rangers' contest against Coahoma is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Howard Coliseum. Links to live stats and the live broadcast are available on nwccrangers.com.
