Cincinnati Deals Cody Reed to Tampa Bay

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In a trade made Friday evening, the Tampa Bay Rays acquired former Northwest left-hander Cody Reed from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Riley O'Brien.

Reed, 27, was designated for assignment by the Reds on August 24. He spent parts of five seasons with the Reds, going 2-12 with a 5.44 ERA in 51 appearances (18 starts). In his career, he is 1-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 33 appearances out of the bullpen.

Over the last three seasons, Reed went 1-4 with a 3.99 ERA in 29 appearances, including a 3.29 ERA in 22 relief appearances. During that stretch, he recorded a 9.05 SO/9 IP ratio and a ground-ball rate of 58.5 pct, according to Stats LLC, 10th-highest among NL pitchers with at least 50 innings from 2018-20.

Reed went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in nine appearances this season.

Reed was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 2013 MLB Draft, becoming the all-time highest draft pick from Northwest. He was traded to the Reds on July 26, 2015, as part of a package for right-hander Johnny Cueto.

While at Northwest, Reed was an NJCAA Third Team All-American, NJCAA All-Region 23 and MACJC First Team All-State selection. The Horn Lake native concluded his Northwest career as the school's all-time leader in strikeouts (161), wins (16), innings pitched (137.2), batters faced (601), starts (23) and shutouts (five). He's second in career complete games (10) and third in opponent batting average (.219) and strikeouts/7 inning game (8.19).

Although he is currently the only Ranger playing in the major leagues, Reed is one of 27 Northwest players to have either been drafted or signed to a free agent deal from an MLB club. See the full list of other professional Rangers here.
