SENATOBIA – With the 2020 Major League Baseball draft rapidly approaching, Northwest sophomore left-hander
Dalton Fowler will be on the radar of several teams after being listed at No. 154 in MLB.com's list of Top 200 Draft prospects.
As a current signee to the University of Oklahoma, Fowler will have his sights set on the MLB Draft for the second consecutive season after being selected in the 27th round by the New York Mets last season. Fowler capped off his Northwest career with a 3.35 career ERA, 127 strikeouts and a 10-2 overall record.
Despite a shortened 2020 season, Fowler finished 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA and tossed 39 strikeouts against 10 walks with four earned runs for the Rangers, including a career-high 14 strikeouts in a victory against Olive-Harvey College on Feb. 28. Northwest was ranked No. 8 nationally and held a program-best 14-1 start before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season.
Fowler's freshman season yielded a 3.76 ERA and a 6-2 overall record on the mound, along with 88 strikeouts against 43 walks and 27 earned runs as Northwest posted a 33-14 record, earning an appearance in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. For his efforts, the Arlington, Tenn. native earned first team All-MACJC honors.
Prior to Northwest, Fowler starred at Arlington High School where he helped the Tigers to back-to-back playoff appearances and a combined 45-21 record over his final two seasons. He finished 6-1 with a 1.62 ERA as a senior, punching out 71 batters in 47.1 innings of work against 29 walks and was named to the Commercial Appeal's All-Metro team.
If selected, Fowler would become the first MLB Draft pick to drafted directly from Northwest since 2015, when second baseman Dalton Dulin was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 17th round. Fowler would also be the first left-handed pitcher selected since
Domenick Carlini (Southeastern Louisiana) was taken by the Minnesota Twins in 2016.
