Northwest Ready to Compete in NJCAA Region 23 Tournament

CLINTON – Although both teams experienced an early exodus from last week's MACJC Tournament, the Northwest men's and women's basketball teams are geared up for one more shot in the postseason after earning bids to this week's NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.

A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College will host the tournament once again this season, with games taking place from Tuesday, March 3 until Friday, March 6.

As the final MACJC seed with a region record of 11-7, the Northwest Lady Rangers advanced to the tournament in Troy Howell's first season as head coach and are making the program's first appearance since the 2017-18 season. The Lady Rangers are matched up against MACJC Tournament champion East Mississippi in a tipoff set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4.

Should Northwest defeat EMCC, it would mark the first time the Lady Rangers have advanced past the first round of the region tournament since doing so in the 2014-15 season, when Northwest defeated Meridian 77-75 on March 5, 2015.

Northwest also reached the men's draw of the region tournament in Shane Oakley's first official season as head coach. Oakley guided the Rangers to a 5-7 Region 23 record last season as the interim, but his team fell just shy of earning a spot in the conference and region tournaments.

This season, Northwest compiled an 8-7 region record and earned the No. 7 seed in the men's bracket. The Rangers will face MACJC Tournament runner-up Northeast on Tuesday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
