SCOOBA – Four Hinds players scored in double figures and Northwest was held to just 30 percent shooting for the evening, as the two-seeded Bulldogs eliminated the third-seeded Rangers from the MACJC Tournament with an 81-55 loss on Monday evening.
Northwest dropped to 15-9 on the season as Hinds moved to 15-7.
Trailing 5-0 out of the gate, the Rangers hung around for most of the first half and even pulled within three off a fastbreak jumper by
Kavonte Tunstall with 6:43 left in the first half.
Leading 19-16, the Bulldogs closed the final six minutes of the first half on a 23-6 run to take a 20-point advantage at the half, 42-22.
Hinds led by 20 points or more throughout the second half, with a brief exception coming off an
R.J. Duhart three-pointer that trimmed the deficit to 17 with eight minutes to go. Christopher Owens responded almost immediately with a three on the other end for Hinds however, sending the Bulldogs back ahead by 20.
Duhart led the Rangers with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals, while
Milton McGee, Jr. provided 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Hinds' Dontrell McQuarter could not be stopped as he led all scorers with 25 points and seven assists, followed by 20 points and 10 rebounds from Ladarius Marshall.
Hinds shot 53 percent from the floor and outscored the Rangers 50-28 in the paint. Northwest never led in the contest.
Northwest will get one more shot in the postseason in next week's NJCAA Region 23 Tournament in Clinton. The Rangers will face off against men's north division champion Northeast on Tuesday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
