Box Score 2 BATON ROUGE, La. – Northwest combined for 18 hits and 13 runs on Saturday afternoon as the 10th-ranked Rangers picked up a 7-0 shutout against Southwest Mississippi and a 6-2 victory at Baton Rouge Community College.
Northwest improved to 5-1 on the season and will host Wallace State-Hanceville in a single, nine-inning game on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 1:30 p.m. Live stats will be provided through nwccrangers.com.
Game 1 – #10 Northwest 7, Southwest Mississippi 0
Peyton Mills and
Wesley Lester combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate while
Parker Stinnett tossed six strikeouts against one walk in four complete innings, as 10th-ranked Northwest blanked Southwest Mississippi 7-0.
Northwest plated two runs in the top of the first off
Kelton Hall's two-run double and later added a third run in top of the fourth, thanks to Lester's RBI-single.
Lester would again come up big for the Rangers in the sixth with an RBI-single that was preceded by a run scored from
Hammer Franks, extending the lead to 5-0.
Tucker Richmond helped Northwest add the exclamation point in the top of the seventh, scoring off an error at first, before another RBI-single from Lester made it a 7-0 advantage.
Southwest failed to make any sort of rally in the bottom of the seventh as
Landon Zizmann struck out the leadoff batter, before a popup to the catcher and a 5-3 grounder ended the game.
Lester finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs as Mills went 2-for-4.
Stinnett improved to 2-0 on the mound with three hits and no runs allowed through four frames.
Jackson Smith and
Zach Willingham also gained relief experience, combining for three strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2 – #10 Northwest 6, Baton Rouge 2
A solo home run from
Garrett Riggs and a 2-for-3 effort at the plate from
Brayland Skinner highlighted the nightcap for Northwest, as the 10th-ranked Rangers defeated host Baton Rouge 6-2.
After Baton Rouge plated a run in the first inning, Northwest came out swinging in the third with a four-run frame.
Blake Miller led off the inning with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch, which led to Riggs reaching base on an error at short.
Skinner then plated Miller off an RBI-double and
Noah Hattier followed with a two-run double that scored Riggs and Skinner, pushing Northwest to a 3-1 lead.
Hall then closed out the third-inning scoring with an RBI-single that allowed Hattier to come home from third, giving the Rangers a 4-1 advantage.
After Riggs' solo shot in the fourth extended the lead to 5-1, Baton Rouge gained a run back in the bottom of the fourth an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Northwest earned an additional run in the fifth as Skinner drew a bases-loaded walk to solidify the 6-2 final.
Sophomore left-hander
Dalton Fowler (2-0) delivered six strikeouts against three walks and two earned runs through 4.1 innings.
Trent Bunting,
Alonzo Hunt and Franks all made relief appearances with Franks earning two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.
