JACKSON - Postseason honors continue to stack up for several members of Northwest's 2020 conference and national championship squad.
Statewide high school and junior college football outlet Mississippi Gridiron released its 2020 MACCC All-Gridiron Team on Saturday afternoon and the list included seven Rangers, highlighted by overall Most Valuable Player
Michael Hiers.
Hiers took the MACCC by storm as arguably the best quarterback in the conference, helping the Rangers to a perfect 6-0 season and the MACCC and National Community College Football championships. The Birmingham, Ala. native and Murray State transfer started all six games for Northwest, throwing 94 completions on 140 attempts for 13 touchdowns and one interception.
Hiers led the conference in completion percentage (67.1%) and passing touchdowns, while finishing second in total completions, passing yards (1,426) and yards per game (237.7). In addition to posting two 300-yard passing games, Hiers also earned two MACCC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, first team All-MACCC North Division and first team Fall All-America honors by JCGridiron.com.
Additionally, six more Rangers earned selections to the MACCC All-Gridiron Team - tailback
Jaquerrious Williams, offensive lineman
Vance Van Every, defensive linemen
Nijel McGriff and
Roderick Daniels, linebacker
Desmyn Baker and return specialist
D.T. Sheffield.
Though he didn't match the stats from his explosive freshman campaign, Williams still came up clutch for the Rangers several times in 2020. The Tupelo native ran for 423 yards and five touchdowns on 83 carries, including two 100-yard rushing games.
Williams scored the game-winning touchdown in the Rangers' 34-28 overtime victory at Northeast on October 22, led the team in receiving with two receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown in the regular season finale against Mississippi Delta, before also scoring his 20th career rushing touchdown in the 40-13 MACCC championship victory at Mississippi Gulf Coast, moving into a three-way tie with
Kevin Perkins (2017-18) and James Puckett (1990-91) for the fifth most rushing scores in program history.
As one of the few returning sophomores on the offensive line, Van Every helped anchor a young unit that helped pave the way for Hiers' stellar season as well as 1,112 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. The Hernando native and Magnolia Heights alumnus was also named to JCGridiron.com's Fall All-America Second Team, the only Northwest lineman to earn postseason accolades.
Two of the Rangers' four leading tacklers resided on the defensive line, a unit that continued to improve throughout the 2020 campaign. Daniels, a freshman, compiled 30 total tackles and a team-high 10 tackles-for-loss, including seven sacks. The Horn Lake native also finished with three hurries and three forced fumbles, while posting his best performance of the season on October 15 against Itawamba, where he racked up eight tackles in his Northwest debut.
McGriff, a sophomore, was another formidable threat on the Rangers' defensive line, posting 29 total tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, three sacks and a forced fumble. The Jacksonville, Fla. native and former West Virginia commit posted his best performance of the season in a 16-14 season-opening victory against Itawamba, tallying 13 total tackles, and earned first team JCGridiron.com Fall All-America honors.
Although he was largely overlooked throughout the season, Baker, a sophomore linebacker, proved to be one of the Rangers' primary defensive leaders in every game this season. Patrolling the defense alongside leading tackler and fellow linebacker
Kylan Robinson, the Clinton native finished second on the team with 37 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a blocked kick on Itawamba's game-winning field goal attempt, saving the season-opening victory for Northwest.
So far, Baker is also the only member of the Rangers' 2020 squad to sign to the next level after inking with Rice University on December 16. He also had offers from Georgia Southern and other Division I programs.
Despite being a freshman in a crowded group of sophomore receivers, Sheffield stood out with 20 receptions for 358 yards and five touchdowns, including a 128-yard output on three receptions in a 41-13 road win at Holmes on November 12. The Corinth native shined on special teams as well, returning five kicks for 105 yards and 11 punts for 91 yards.
Northwest now owns four national championships (1982, 1992, 2015, 2020) and 10 conference titles (1960, 1965, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2015, 2020).
