Houston Astros Select Peyton Plumlee in 31st Round

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Former Northwest and current Mississippi State right-handed pitcher Peyton Plumlee has been selected in the 31st round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft by the Houston Astros, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Following Dalton Fowler's selection in the 27th round earlier in the day, Plumlee became the 20th all-time draft selection from Northwest and the eighth draft pick in the last seven years. He is the first Ranger in program history to be taken by the Astros' organization.

In his only season with the Rangers in 2016, Plumlee went 6-2 on the hill with a 4.58 ERA in nine starts. The Olive Branch native and Lewisburg High School product totaled 53 strikeouts against 23 walks in 55 innings of work, holding opposing batters to a .268 batting average.

Plumlee's only complete game in a Northwest uniform came in a 6-3 victory at Northeast, where he struck out eight and allowed an earned run in a full nine-inning performance. He also reached his career-high strikeout total of nine in an 11-0 shutout of Coahoma.

Following his time at Northwest, Plumlee went on to Mississippi State and made an immediate impact on the Bulldogs' pitching staff. As a sophomore, he appeared in 26 games with eight starts, posting six wins and a save while tallying 54 strikeouts, including a season-best of seven in his debut against Western Illinois. Plumlee came up big for MSU in the Hattiesburg Regional, earning the save against South Alabama.

After missing his junior season, Plumlee returned to the mound for his senior campaign and played a pivotal role as the Bulldogs' Sunday starter for most of the 2019 season. Through 14 starts and 19 appearances, Plumlee has recorded a 6-4 record and a 3.87 ERA with 57 strikeouts against 26 walks. Most recently, the former Ranger struck out three batters and allowed a pair of earned runs despite a solid five-inning outing against Miami in the Starkville Regional championship on June 2.
