SECAUCUS, N.J. – Northwest freshman left-hander
Dalton Fowler has been taken in the 27th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.
With Fowler's selection, Northwest has now boasted 19 all-time draft selections, including seven selections in the last seven years.
Cody Reed is the highest draft pick all-time, going No. 46 overall to the Kansas City Royals in 2013. Fowler is also the first Northwest player all-time to be taken by the Mets organization.
In his freshman season, Fowler compiled a 6-2 record and a 3.76 ERA in 13 starts and 64.2 innings of work. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound southpaw struck out a team-high 88 batters against 43 walks and held opposing hitters to a .221 batting average and also recorded two complete games.
Fowler allowed two earned runs or less in 10 of his 13 starts on the season, punching out a career-high 12 in his Northwest debut Feb. 25 at Copiah-Lincoln.
Fowler's longest outing of the season came in a split against Hinds, where he went the distance with nine strikeouts while allowing just one walk in a 4-0 victory.
In the weeks leading up to the draft, the Arlington, Tenn., native was listed No. 150 overall in MLB Pipeline's Top 200 prospect list that featured players in 35 different states, including a dozen players from Mississippi. He was ranked the No. 3 junior college prospect according to Perfect Game.
