Rangers Even Division Record With Coahoma Victory

SENATOBIA – Northwest sophomore Kendrick Fountain notched his first career double-double and the Rangers held Coahoma to a season low point total in a 67-50 win at Howard Coliseum on Monday.

Northwest pulled its division record back to .500 at 4-4 while also improving to 11-7 overall. Coahoma dropped to 7-12 and 2-6 in the MACJC North.

Despite falling behind 4-2 in the opening minutes, Ernest Minton tied the contest with a layup and the Rangers never trailed the rest of the way.

Northwest led by single digits for most of the first half until the final two minutes and change, when a layup from Minton pushed the Rangers ahead by 10 at 29-19. The lead would increase slightly to 12 at halftime, thanks to a Quieran Gray layup with 18 seconds left.

After an early second half spark that brought the Tigers within five, Northwest responded with a 14-0 scoring run that pushed the Rangers' advantage to 49-30.

Northwest led by as many as 21 over the final 13 minutes of regulation and never showed any danger of surrendering a substantial run from the Tigers, cruising to the 17-point victory at home.

Although it was a quiet night of just 13 percent (2-of-16) from beyond the arc, the Rangers made up for it with 44 percent shooting from the floor. Northwest also put up a solid showing from the charity stripe, finishing 11-of-13 for a season-best 85 percent.

Coahoma outscored the Rangers 25-14 off the bench, but Northwest bested the Tigers in the paint (48-26) and in fast break points (16-10).

Aside from Fountain's career night with 16 points and 15 rebounds, the Rangers also got a boost from Jitaurious Gordon's 16 points and 15 points with seven rebounds from Quez Williamson.

Coahoma was paced by a 15-point showing off the bench from Terry Williams and a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds from Dequan Morris.

Northwest now turns its attention to Thursday, Feb. 7 at Northeast (16-3, 6-2 MACJC), who are coming off a rare home loss to Itawamba on Monday. Tipoff from Booneville is set for 7:30 p.m.
