SMCC Fends off Late Lady Ranger Rally

SUMMIT – Trailing by 14 at halftime, Northwest fought back to trim its deficit under 10 in the second half but the Lady Rangers were ultimately unable to gain control in Monday's 73-65 loss at Southwest Mississippi.

SMCC snapped a five-game winning streak for Northwest, improving to 6-1 on the season. Northwest dropped to 7-3 overall with the loss.

Northwest opened the contest with a 6-0 start but quickly fell victim to a 16-2 run by the Lady Bears, falling behind 16-8 midway through the first period.

Leading 23-17 entering the second period, SMCC continued to pull away from the Lady Rangers with baskets from Jolie Williams and Geonna Marshall, pushing Northwest into a 30-17 hole less than four minutes later.

Claire Fleming's jumper finally provided the Lady Rangers with their first score of the second quarter at the 5:19 mark but despite ending the scoring drought, Northwest still trailed 40-26 at the break.

Southwest led by 16 in the early moments of the second half, only to see the Lady Rangers storm back to cut the margin under 10 with I'esha Mosby's jumper at the 4:51 mark of the third period.

Northwest continued to slice into the Lady Bears' advantage over the course of the second half, with Lindsay Hall's three pulling the Lady Rangers back within five late in the quarter.

Despite the inspired effort in the second half, Southwest never saw its lead slip below five as the Lady Rangers remained within striking distance the rest of the way, only to see the Lady Bears respond when needed to hold on for the home victory.

Hall netted a season-high 11 points and finished 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Kayla Freeman led the way with 12. Freshman Taylor Fletcher also chipped in 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds in the loss.

Northwest was outscored in fast break (16-6), second chance (25-3) and bench points (37-23) on the evening. The Lady Rangers were also outrebounded 68-32, including 30-8 offensively.

D'Mya Wilson led all scorers with 24 points and 13 boards, followed by 15 points and seven rebounds from Williams. Taylor Ben also collected 15 rebounds for Southwest.

Northwest will conclude the first half of its schedule on Monday, Dec. 9 in its MACJC North Division opener at Itawamba.
